The Southeast Minnesota Chapter serves over 20 area pools providing training for Water Safety and Lifeguarding instructors. These pools offer Red Cross swim lessons and Lifeguard training. Contact the Red Cross or your area pool for class offerings or more information. We also offer Aquatic Examiner which assists in pool operation.
Learn to Swim: The Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program features six levels of learn-to-swim instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience. Red Cross learn-to-swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach people to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.
Swim Levels
- Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills. Feel comfortable in the water and learn water safety skills.
- Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills. Gives students success with fundamental skills.
- Level 3 - Stroke Development. Builds on the skills in level two by providing additional guided practice.
- Level 4 - Stroke Improvement. Develops confidence in the strokes learned and improves other aquatic skills.
- Level 5 - Stroke Refinement. Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.
- Level 6 - Swimming and Skill Proficiency. Refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level six is designed with "menu" options. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses, such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. These options include:

Lifeguarding |

The Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program is intended to train individuals in the skill and knowledge needed to lifeguard at aquatic facilities. The Lifeguard Training Program is about 28 hours in length. The pre-requisite test is held on the first day. With successful completion of all required skills and knowledge, students will receive certification in the following: Lifeguarding and First Aid (three years), CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (one year).
PREREQUISITES (Students will be tested for the following skills)
- Minimum age: 15-years-old on the last day of class
- Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order:
- 100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick.
- 100 yards breaststroke.
- The last 100 yards may be a mixture of front crawl or breaststroke.
- Swim 20 yards front crawl or breaststroke, dive to a depth of 7 to 10', retrieve a 10 lb object and return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Pass one written test with a minimum grade of 80% or better on each section.
- Successfully complete four final skill scenarios.
- Successfully performs all critical skills.
Red Cross Lifeguard Training includes the following:
- Lifeguard Training
- CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
- First Aid
Other optional course add-ons include:
- Preventing Disease Transmission
- Oxygen Administration
- Automated External Defibrillator
- Waterpark Lifeguarding and Waterfront Lifeguarding
- The Guard Start class is offered to future lifeguards that are from 11-14 years old.

American Red Cross Basic Sailing |

Basic Sailing offers classroom and on-the-water sailing instruction to prepare students for the experience of safe sailing in small boats. The classes are taught by Red Cross volunteer instructors. Minimum age requirement is 16 years old. All on-the-water students must pass a swimming skills check which includes: tread water for 5 minutes, swim 25 yards, and put a life jacket on while in the water. Students need to attend all class sessions for certification. Class fee includes all materials. Basic Sailing is offered once a year in June. Classroom sessions are held in Rochester and on-the-water sessions are held in Lake City. |
